Astigmatism is a refractive error that causes blurred or distorted vision at a particular distance. Instead of light coming into the eye and focusing right on the retina, astigmatism occurs when an irregularly shaped cornea or lens in the eye causes light to focus at multiple points either in front of or behind the retina.
